2019 has been a great year for environmental activism. We’re so proud to see people everywhere reducing their plastic waste, cleaning up our oceans, and fighting against climate change.

With your help, Sustainable Seacoast has been working for the environment right here in the Seacoast community of Maine and New Hampshire. As 2019 comes to an end, we want to share some of our favorite ways that Sustainable Seacoast has helped our community become more sustainable and environmentally conscious.

The Hydration Station

Hydration Station

Together with Blue Drop Water, we introduced a new 4-tap Hydration Station at local events along the seacoast. The Hydration Station offers free water to all attendees, with a commitment from the event that no single-use plastic water bottles are sold or gifted at the event. Attendees can get free refills in their own reusable bottles, or receive a compostable cup for a suggested $1 donation.

In addition to giving free advice on zero-waste best practices, we used the Hydration Station at the following Maine and New Hampshire events:

  • Riverfest
  • Kittery Block Party
  • Kittery Community Market
  • Wild Vibes Festival
  • The Concert in the Lot
  • Westival
  • Seacoast Half Marathon
  • Several events at the Seacoast Science Center

We currently have two Hydration Stations and are looking forward to making more in order to fill the demand for our 2020 events.

Contact us if you’re interested in using the Hydration Station at your upcoming event!

Mug Library

Mug Library

Did you know that 25 billion coffee cups are thrown away in the US each year? Even if seacoast residents just use 1 coffee cup per week, that’s still 52 cups per person going into landfills.

In an effort to reduce single-use coffee cup waste on the seacoast, we partnered with Portsmouth’s Creative Mornings to create and launch the Mug Library at their monthly events. The Mug Library offers free mugs to all meeting attendees, making coffee service at their events zero-waste.

Heading into 2020, we’re looking for coffee shops willing to take a stand against single-use coffee cups. Reach out to us if you or anyone you know is interested in contributing!

Beach Clean-Ups

Beach Clean Up

Keeping our oceans clean is essential in keeping our planet healthy. Living on the seacoast, we have more opportunities than most to protect our oceans. In 2019, we partnered with Blue Ocean Society and Surfriders NH to conduct beach clean-ups throughout the year.
